First of all, understand that water is water. The water I get out of the tap here in San Diego, CA is basically the same as the water in a lake or the ocean. The contaminants in the water however, vary dramatically. Everywhere you go, water has a different mixture, or recipe of contaminants and this recipe makes all the difference in the world.
There are different types of contaminants. Very quickly, the four different types of contaminants are…
• INORGANIC CONTAMINANTS, which are minerals and toxic metals (lead, arsenic, fluoride, mercury, etc.),
• RADIOACTIVE CONTAMINANTS, which is actually a sub-category of inorganic contaminants (uranium, cesium, radium, etc.)
• ORGANIC CONTAMINANTS, which are basically petrochemicals (gasoline, solvents, pesticides, etc).
• BIOLOGICAL CONTAMINANTS, which are obviously living organisms that can make us very sick (cholera, typhoid, cryptosporidium, etc).
Of these four types of contaminants, biological is definitely the worst. The other types of contaminants can hurt you over a long period of time, but biological contaminants can harm you immediately.
Your goal should be broad-spectrum purity, but your absolute priority is to kill biological contaminants. This is why municipal water treatment facilities are focused on biological contaminants. This is also why FEMA and the Red Cross recommend only three methods for treating water during an emergency.
• Chemical Disinfection.
• Prolonged Boiling of water.
You will notice that filters of any kind are not recommended by the Red Cross or FEMA, because they do not kill biological contaminants and because they can allow biological contaminants through to the filtered water without you knowing it.
Of the three methods mentioned above, distillation is the only process that produces high-purity, sterile water. Distillation can effectively be used to turn ocean water into high-purity, sterile water, forever!
